Quarantine! by Mike Gonzales

Wow! What a month, eh?
I found myself sequestered at home on April 1st, no fool’n!

To say the least doing nothing is a challenge. First, I finished a WIP, then I went back to self-edit a couple of older stories.

Next, I binge watched three different series on Amazon Prime.

The day came when I shocked my darling companion by dusting my study. She nearly fainted!

I shocked myself when I just said “NO” to eBay!

Eventually, I broke out an old puzzle, spray painted all the pieces white, and started on it when it dried. Yesterday I gathered up all those pieces and tossed them into the garbage!

Like everyone, I’m counting the days till this is over. My darling companion refers to “a return to normalcy.” I wonder…will we ever return to life as it was?

I have to reply, “yes.”
The 1918-19 pandemic, per capita, was infinitely worse, killing more people than WW1. And that horror was followed by “the roaring twenties!”

Bottom line; do not give up hope. We’ll survive this, together, and roar on into the rest of the 2020s!

In the meantime, read something! Fire Star Press offers anything you might want to read. I suggest you dive in…

Size Matters by Michael E. Gonzales

I’m doing research for a new novel. Of course, it’s a science fiction story. I predicate part of my story on what’s called the quilted multiverse. A theory that suggests that in the endless expanse of space there is more than one universe.
Interesting theory if you read into it but great fodder for a story!

The visible Universe

One of my many questions is… “How big is our universe?” I would use its size to extrapolate the size of others.
My web searches provided me with numbers, in miles, kilometers, astronomical units, light years, and parsecs. All so large that only a cosmologist could get his head around such numbers!
So…I got on line and asked an astronomer. Here is her response:

“The cosmic background radiation, in a synchronized map of the gravitational cosmic background radiation will give a good description.
“I would describe it according to the updated Hubble Equation. We can only see as far as the quarks condensate-plasma went before going into its reversibly mathematically state.”

Well, that certainly cleared up that question.
Continued research led me to a neophyte’s understanding. Our universe is huge beyond our puny mind’s ability to comprehend.
Nevertheless, I continued to gather information and plot my story.
I have tried to use language to describe the vastness of space, but I am not up to the task. Everything I write seems small in comparison.
I’ve read what other have written. Gallant efforts, but…no.
It is not really the size of the universe that impresses, but rather how infinitesimally small we are in it.
Take three minutes of your time, and watch this video. It will leave you with a gasping impression of our place in this unbelievable universe of ours, both above our heads…and beneath our feet!

New Release -- The Blue of Antyllus (The Unborn Galaxy Book 5) by Michael E. Gonzales

The alien world of Antyllus is moving forward under new rule now that the war has been fought and won. With the native E’meset tribe joining with the emerging rebel Earth forces against Wilmington, the nefarious commander of the corrupt IIEA army of mercenaries, a tenuous peace has been patched together—but the solution for that peace is not workable for some, and whispers of a deadly uprising are in the wind...

Captain Nash Rastaban tries to rebuild his life after being duped into fighting with Wilmington’s iniquitous forces. He is recruited by Dave Mitchell to help quell the mercenaries who plan to take over Antyllus—a battle he wants no part of. But when he stands to lose all he holds dear, he realizes that peace is something he is going to have to fight for—this time, on the right side.

Will Antyllus ever be settled? Can the E’meset trust the humans and SUBs to fight alongside them against those corrupt officials who would take over Antyllus for their own gain? Power is a formidable motivator, but Antyllus—and all it stands for—is worth this fight…worth dying for. Nash and the ragtag band of soldiers he leads are determined to protect their homes, their loves, and their lives—even if it means making a last, defiant stand here in THE BLUE OF ANTYLLUS…

EXCERPT:

Not long after the celebration had started, a call went out to all personnel with any form of medical training to report to any one of the medical facilities within New Roanoke.
After eating, Tanny donned her mask and wandered about through the throngs, she eventually found herself at the eastern gate, a huge set of concrete doors surmounted with a wall of reinforced razor wire. Beyond that was what the humans called “The Wild Blue Yonder,” or just “The Blue,” ― the vast, untamed and deadly forest covering the planet. The trees grew taller than on Earth in the lower gravity. The forest’s colors were various shades of cyan, blues, purples, and even black. Here and there were other colors such as orange, red, and green, but all dark shades. This was a result of the pale light from the planet’s red dwarf star.
The low light required vegetation on Antyllus to possess more photosynthetic pigments to capture radiation in a wider range of wavelengths. These plants reflected little of the light that struck them; thus, they had adapted these colors as best for photosynthesis.
Just outside the east gate and beyond the three-hundred-meter kill zone, the cyan wall of this alien forest stood witness over the site of the heaviest fighting. Bodies littered the ground. The bloody scene told the tale of the great violence that had washed over the area. The sight of the carnage horrified Tanny.

Book 5 The last of the series. By Michael Gonzales

You read book four in The Unborn Galaxy Series, The Vampires of Antyllus, you traveled millions of miles to join Earth’s first interstellar colony on a completely alien world.
There, you learned of the great evil stalking the land. You journeyed through and faced the incredible dangers of the blue forest. You trod the ancient streets of deserted cities once peopled with the dwindling indigenous population. Your mission ― to alert the commander to the proof you gathered at great risk.
Ultimately you found yourself in a war, outnumbered and out of options.
How you lived through it you cannot imagine.
You thought, as you closed the book on the last page, that you were leaving Antyllus, and its duel population, happy, and at peace.
You could not have been more wrong!
Dr. Eltanie Austrini, known as Tanny to her friends, had been among the last to arrive on Antyllus from Earth. She, and all the civilian non combatants were only released from their many safe rooms in the colony structure as hostilities ceased.
She was seeing this new world for the first time and she was overcome with wonder and curiosity.

Peace and happiness are defined differently by different people.
Recovery after the battle would take a great deal of work, there were wounded to care for, the dead to burry, and the colony facility was badly damaged and demanded immediate attention if the humans were to survive.
Those who arrived here for reasons other than settlement, and who are now trapped on this alien world with no hope of rescue, see this peace as a life sentence at hard labor. They see themselves as slaves. But―they have a plan.
The relationships that spring up between Tanny and a former enemy, between a soldier and an E'meset woman, could just be collateral damage in the inevitable conflict to come.

The Unborn Galaxy series by Michael E. Gonzales

Another rousing BLOG post by Mike Gonzales, the American, Spanish, Englishman.

I cannot start to tell you how fortunate I am to have been published buy Fire Star Press.

Who among us can’t wall paper their home
with rejection letters? I was once told, by a literary agent I was courting, that “a rejection is not a reflection on you, personally.”

Of course not. It’s just a rejection of the work I poured my heart and soul into. It’s a comment on the vast amount of emotion, consternation, and yes, at times even tears, that I have invested in the telling of that story. It's a comment on that part of me that I have transferred onto that page.

Not that I'm bitter, you understand!

Despite the pain associated with these rejections - I persevered. I still have pinned to my computer the quote by Richard Bach, “An author is a writer who didn't give up.”

The circumstances that brought me into contact with Prairie Rose Publications, as I look back on it, seem highly unlikely. Perhaps even guided by an unseen, all powerful hand. Anyway, that’s how I like to see it.

So here I am, four books on the open market and I still can’t believe it. So, thank you, everyone at Fire Star Press! (Really, can’t say that enough!)

My first published works are a five-book series called, “The Unborn Galaxy.” Each book is a standalone story but they all take place in the same fictional universe. Their commonalities are that they all origin on JILL, the Joint International Lunar Laboratory, and there are bleed over characters. For Example, in “Across a Sea of Stars” Kathy is a minor character popping in and out of the story but only briefly. However, in “The Vampires of Antyllus” she is the main character.

I hope you’ll follow me on this adventure through The Unborn Galaxy, to the Moon, and beneath is cratered surface.

To a battle ground inside the great Moon base.

Come, be whisked away from the desolation of the lunar surface to a world of beauty and danger.

And take your position aboard the Demeter for a many years long voyage to another world and a fresh start for humanity, that is, if the promise of this new world doesn’t bring about its destruction.

             Then in the fifth book…

The Unborn Galaxy; Dark Moon Rising, The Battle of Broken Moon, Across a Sea of Stars, The Vampires of Antyllus - Available through Amazon.com, Kobo, iBooks, Books-a-Million, Walmart.com, and Barnes and Noble.com

New Release — USA: Eliminated! (The Jupiter Factor Series Book 1) by William D. Nash

Jack Slater has chased UFOs his entire life—and now, he’s found one! It’s real, it’s abandoned in an alien hangar—and it’s in perfect condition. As the director of a governmental agency that studies aerial phenomena (OSAP), he knows he’s just discovered the find of a lifetime…and he wastes no time learning to fly it.

But as Jack and his OSAP colleagues explore the saucer’s secrets, the world watches as a deadly meteor plummets to earth, leaving a devastating path of destruction in its wake—including two important space stations. Too late, it becomes apparent the meteor is a missile, apparently fired by the Russian Federation. Detonating, it releases a terrible bioweapon, seemingly beyond the capabilities of Russia’s current weapons technology

The alien technology Jack has discovered is the only hope of survival for the United States. But that technology has appeared at a suspiciously convenient time, in Jack’s opinion. What are they dealing with? Is humanity truly at war with itself, or is an alien external force playing a deadly game determined to see the USA: ELIMINATED!

Space—2072

“This is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard the Spaceplane Aurora. We have just escaped Earth’s gravity, and are now cruising at an altitude of seventy-one miles. Thrusters will kick in in about five minutes. Our ETA to the Interplanetary Space Station is twenty-seven minutes. Please stay seated and keep your seatbelts on at all times.”
Thirty-one people half-filled the passenger cabin. Scientists and engineers in various fields sat chatting. They would live and work aboard the station for the next several years.
Among the passengers was a family of three with their six-year-old daughter, the mother an astrophysicist and the father an engineer. Little Julie would be the first child aboard the space station, and she was excited. She sat next to the window looking out. The stars, brighter and more numerous than she had ever seen at home.
“Mommy, look. Fireflies!” She pressed her nose against the window.
Her mother looked down at her, smiled. “Honey, there are no fireflies in space. There’s no air in…” She stopped short. “What the…fireflies?” A swarm of small lights danced outside the window. Before she said anything else, a bright sheet of light appeared in the forward section of the cabin. It proceeded to move toward the rear, passing through people.
“I think we’re being scanned,” someone speculated. The light went through them with no effect. “It seems harmless.”
“Where’s it coming from?” someone asked.
“I think from that.” One of the men pointed out his window. A glowing sphere-shaped object paced the spaceplane.
“Is that what I think it is?” another questioned in disbelief.
     “Well, it’s definitely a UFO.”
Several seconds later, it circled the plane several times. It approached the plane, then backed away. It performed the maneuver several times. Then it glowed brighter. It turned and charged the spaceplane. It ripped through the cabin like it was paper as people screamed. The vacuum of space gripped them, pulled them to their deaths.
The cabin cameras caught everything and uploaded the video to the space station. Right before the video ended, it showed little Julie trying to hold on to her seat, still strapped in. Moments later the strap broke. The horror on her face grew as she flew through the large gaping hole.
The Spaceplane Aurora drifted high in Earth’s orbit. Holes in its sides. Floating debris. Tumbling bodies. Some burned as they re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.

New Release -- Search for the Storm Maker (Polarity Book 2) by C. A. Jamison

But when Trulie disappears and it becomes clear that she’s been kidnapped, Rush’s life is turned upside down. Without Trulie, his energy begins to deplete rapidly, and there’s no way to control it! As much as he wants to remain calm, he knows that Trulie is suffering the same energy drain as he is—and he knows she is in terrible danger at the hands of her abductor.

Grasping at straws, and with very few clues, the small band of plasmetric teens who rallies around Rush and Trulie head for a faraway mystery island where they hope to rescue Trulie. As a new and changing energy comes to life within them, they realize that only together can they face the demons of their past and take on an army to silence a mad man.

EXCERPT

The sun beamed on my back as a breeze lifted my hair, and I kept away from the cracks in the soil and stayed close to the brush. “I’ve got this.”
To my right, I leaned to look into a hole. The bottom disappeared into the darkness, but the width—too small to fit a human. I eased forward. One foot at a time.
A dark shadow on the ground ahead of me had a large opening. A cluster of overgrown weeds grew to the left of the hole. I stopped. “I think I found the spot!”
“Be cautious,” Trulie yelled. The brush had me hidden from her sight, and she asked, “Did you tie the rope around your waist?”
Cracks split the ground around most of the area. “Ah. Yeah.” I quickly wrapped the rope around my middle and tied a double knot. “I’m good,” I called.
The birds, the road ahead, even the wind kept silent as though nature held a breath. I proceeded across the damp earth. A foot from the edge, I gradually leaned forward. The leaves rustled on a flowering bush. An animal darted past my foot. Startled, my instincts reacted with a hard step back, and the earth gave way below me.

Building a world - by Michael E. Gonzales

Building a world.

I have received several compliments on the “worlds” I have built for my story and characters to live in.

“Mike, how do you do it?”

Well, first it should be known that I read a lot of books, and articles on the internet, about writing in general, and world building specifically.

But, of course it all has to start in the mind. For me, I must see every detail come to life. The dark void in my mind must fill with the visuals in extreme detail.  I sit and imagine the set where my drama will play out. I close my eyes and see the places where my adventure will occur.

Latter, I’ll go on line, find images that look as I see them and then, in photoshop I alter them to better resemble my invented locals. I do this to assist me in visualization and thus description.

But eventually you have to put it all down on paper.
A general map of the entire planet (if your going all over it) or just the area of the world where your story unfolds. Mountains, lakes, streams, rivers, seas, and of course the cities and towns, and give a name to each.

If the story takes place in just one town, you need to draw out the city plan, mark the important structures, and give a name to every street. The same is true for the larger world, even if you don’t plan to use these details go on and name the lakes, streams, rivers, and adjacent habitations. Determine the distances between the locations.
All this will aid you in maintaining consistency and continuity in your story.

Worlds, even those in science fiction and fantasy have more to them than just terrain features. You must consider the flora and fauna. If the world is…other worldly, then you must dream up plants and animals that fit your world.
For example, in The Vampires of Antyllus the planet orbits a red star binary system and the planet is smaller than Earth. These two facts dictate a lot about the flora and fauna. Red stars (the most plentiful type of star in the galaxy) do not put out as much light as our own sun and in a different wavelength.  So, day time on Antyllus will be just a tad brighter than twilight. This means the plants will be darker in color. Shades of dark blue, mostly, but also black, burnt orange, deep red, these colors will absorb more of the stars energy which is necessary for photosynthesis.

The trees, generally, will be taller, due to the low gravity (smaller planet, remember?) and so will the animal life, they will be bigger, stronger, meaner.

This applies to the anthropoid life as well.
Let’s call the anthropoids “people”. These people will have their own civilization, their own culture, their own religion. It’s really important that you invent and detail all of this.
And of course, the people from Earth are not living in our “universe”. The civilization and culture they live in will not be that which we are familiar with. So, this is where you must employ a bit of speculative fiction, and guess either about the future, or invent a new Earth culture from the ground up.
Create as much detail as you can before your start. However, as we all know, things happen as you write, new places and things spring forth from your fertile imagination that might just change the course of your story. When this happens, go to your records and to your map and make note of the new additions.
As for the stuff you don’t use, it’s okay, leave it be. You might have call to reference those notes in the future.
For me world building is not only critical, but a great deal of fun as well. On your first draft, go crazy, you can always readdress it later.
With your pen, or your computer, you can wield the power of creation!

New Release -- The Vampires of Antyllus (The Unborn Galaxy Book 4) by Michael E. Gonzales #firestarpress #prairierosepubs #sciencefiction

A distant world in orbit around a binary red star set, light years away, holds the promise of humanity’s future. It also contains a deadly secret that unleashes the worst of all greed and the unthinkable—those who would kill for blood.

When Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Selina is offered the choice to relocate to the Antyllus colony, she hardly has a choice.  The military has not only training and time invested in her, but she’s also been given a new SUB body to defeat the deadly disease that would have killed her, as a human.  Kathy, along with her executive officer, Major Dave Mitchel, a handful of SUBs, and the members of the Colony Defense Force, must pit their skills and abilities against the most malevolent enemy the universe has ever faced.

Failure will mean a terrible end for the planet’s native inhabitants, those who’ve come to colonize Antyllus, and certain death for the small cadre of defenders, as well. In a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, how can Kathy, Dave, and their band of soldiers defend an entire world against THE VAMPIRES OF ANTYLLUS?

EXCERPT

Kathy saw the net stop then zoomed in on Illat, who yanked hard on the line. Illat could see the net was stuck so he wisely stopped trying to pull it.
Kathy refocused on the net. Dave was ripping the top of it apart with his one good hand. Then he jumped up and grabbed the vine just as the net fell out from around him. Kathy was shocked. Had she been a breather, she would have gasped. "Dave!" She cried out, knowing full well he would not hear her at this distance with the river roaring below him.
She knew Dave was without the use of his right arm, so she instantly understood what she had to do. Without hesitation, she leapt up and grabbed the vine and started to hand over hand her way out to Dave as fast as she could. The farther out she got, the more she had to slow down, her movement was causing a wave affect in the vine that was bouncing Dave up and down. She could not eliminate this effect but she could minimize it by slowing down. As strong as Dave might be, he was still trying to maintain a grip on a wet, swinging, bouncing vine.
When she finally got to him, she spoke first. "Are you this much fun on every date?"

How my dog helps me write. Michael E. Gonzales

On the 5th of this month the fourth book in my series, The Unborn Galaxy, will be released. Number four, still very exciting. I hope the thrill of a new release never gets old.
This forth book will take those who have been following the many adventures spawned on JILL, the Joint International Lunar laboratory, far, far from the Earth's solitary satellite.

In a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, how can Kathy, Dave, and their band of soldiers defend an entire world against THE VAMPIRES OF ANTYLLUS?

“Mike, where do you come up with this sh― ah…stuff?” Friends frequently ask me. Well, there are many sources of inspiration. My dog is one of them.

We are a Doberman family. Our dog, Sarge, is a dark chocolate color, he a flop eared and he is a beloved member of our family.
Dobermans get a bad rap as vicious. This would only be true of our Sarge if he thought someone were threatening or hurting a member of his pack.

With us and our friends he’s a real sweetheart. And we just love him.

A month or so ago I wanted to start a new story could not think of anything to write.

I had been watching Sarge play “ring” with Max, our son (Sarge’s brother), then watched him sleep on Max’s lap. Later he came into the den to keep me company.

The TV was on and I noted that with certain sounds emanating from the set he would alert. Doorbells, dogs barking, and gun shots.
I smiled at him and thought to myself, My hero.

It was then that my imagination kicked in, and I began to visualize Sarge as a superhero.

That made me laugh.

Then I started to see him in many guises. As a soldier I saw him, rifle in hand, prepared to do battle with Zombie dogs! He is victorious and returns home an American Hero!

As an Astronaut he journeys into deepest space seeking out new worlds and new life, boldly going where no Doberman has gone before!

Perhaps on another planet he discovers alien Dobies!

And has to deploy robotic drones to keep them at bay!

Well, I never incorporated any of those daydreams into a story, but he sure helps stir up the creative juices. Perhaps the world is ready for a superhero dog? Ah, now I think about it, it’s been done. Of course, not with a Doberman!

The one thing I can say for sure…he is a lover.

Doberman Pinschers eat a lot. They are a large breed dog. If you love dogs as much as I do you’d hate to see one go hungry, so please purchase a copy of my new novel, “The Vampires of Antyllus,” a story he did donate a little inspiration too.

Thanks, ya’ll.
